Kirkwood, MO: The St. Louis Suburb That Still Feels Like a Small Town

You'll know you're in Kirkwood when you hear the train. Nine square miles wedged between Highway 40 and I-44, this inner-ring suburb is close enough to all parts of St. Louis for an easy commute, and far enough to feel like its own town, complete with a downtown you'd actually choose to spend a Saturday in.

Quick facts:

  • 9 square miles, 27,000+ residents
  • Kirkwood School District also reaches Oakland, Glendale, Warson Woods, and part of Des Peres
  • 300+ acres of parkland; official Tree City USA

Downtown (Many Just Call It DTK)

Sixteen walkable blocks, 100-plus businesses, and 46 places to eat, anchored by the farmers market, the century-old train depot where Amtrak still stops daily, and the library, YMCA, and City Hall clustered a block apart. Grab coffee at Kaldi's or Teleo, and you'll probably run into someone you know.

The Vibe

Walkable streets. A downtown that still feels like a downtown. Longtime residents next to families who just moved in, all zoned for one of the best school districts in the region. Kirkwood isn't a starter suburb. It's the kind you stay in.

A Little History

Kirkwood was founded in 1853 as the first planned commuter suburb west of the Mississippi, laid out along the railroad and named for the engineer who built it, James Pugh Kirkwood. That railroad history never left. The same train still pulls into the same depot, every day.

The Houses

Eight historic districts protect a genuine mix: three-story Victorians, post-war bungalows, and Dutch colonials standing next to new infill construction going up around them. Few St. Louis suburbs pack in this much architectural range block to block.

Who Kirkwood Is For
  • Families chasing the school district without giving up walkability
  • Commuters who want highway access and don't mind a train whistle (some love it)
  • Buyers who want real architectural character instead of a cookie-cutter subdivision
  • City transplants who want a Main Street of their own
