The Historic Neighborhood Built Around the Missouri Botanical Garden
Shaw is just 0.6 square miles of Victorian brick streets, tucked between Interstate 44 and Tower Grove Park, with the Missouri Botanical Garden running along its western edge, right where its namesake, Henry Shaw, once kept his own country estate.
Quick facts:
Shaw's western edge runs straight into the Missouri Botanical Garden, 79 acres Henry Shaw founded on his own land in 1859 and one of the oldest botanical gardens in the country. Tower Grove Park closes off the southern border. Between the two, almost every home in the neighborhood is a short walk from serious green space, which is unusual for a neighborhood this dense and this close to downtown.
Shaw and Thurman Avenues carry the neighborhood's day-to-day life: Fiddlehead Fern Cafe and SweetArt for coffee and pastry, Five Aces Bar-B-Que and Baileys' Range for something heavier, Wild Olive Provisions for groceries done right, and Sasha's on Shaw and Gallery Pub on Thurman for a drink after. It's a short list on purpose. Nobody's trying to compete with South Grand a few blocks over, they're just trying to be good at what they do.
Shaw is small enough that you notice the same faces on your walk to the coffee shop, and dense enough that you're never more than a block from a Victorian facade worth stopping to look at. It's a neighborhood people move to for the house and stay in for the block.
Long before it was Shaw, this was Prairie des Noyers, a stretch of walnut-tree meadow named by French settlers in 1769. Henry Shaw, an English-born merchant, arrived in St. Louis in 1819 and eventually bought up land here, building his country estate and, in 1859, founding the Missouri Botanical Garden on the grounds. He gave Tower Grove Park to the city in 1868 and platted Shaw Place, an English-inspired residential enclave designed by architect George I. Barnett. Growth took off after the Grand Avenue Viaduct opened in 1889, adding roughly 400 homes in the 1890s and 1,000 more in the decade after, including Tyler Place and the grand houses of Flora Place, whose ornate entrance gates went up in 1897.
Shaw earned Certified Local Historic District status in 1985, and it shows: block after block of Victorian brick, from Tyler Place's uniform two-story rowhouses, deed-restricted from the start to keep a consistent brick streetscape, to the larger, more ornate homes along Flora Place. It's one of the most architecturally intact 19th-century neighborhoods left in the city.

Shaw isn't just another neighborhood on Dawn's map. It's where she bought her very first home, so she knows this historic district from the inside, not just from a listing sheet.
