8 Ways To Love The Home You’re In

Andrea Durway February 14, 2023

In the age of Pinterest and Instagram, it is easy to look at your current living situation and feel a bit disappointed. How do you love the home you’re in when influencers and bloggers have built entire careers around showcasing beautiful, and often unattainable, interiors? Many of us don’t have the time, budget, or space for perfectly color coordinated laundry rooms and drool-worthy pantries. We’re lucky to get the shoes picked up and toilet paper roll changed before impromptu guests swing by.

But even if you’re not living in your dream home, there are things you can do to improve how you feel about your place. Here are some tips to help you learn to love your home, even if it isn’t perfect.

  1. First, acknowledge that social media is usually not realistic.
  2. Get to know your home. Take some time to explore every nook and cranny and get to know your home inside and out. This can help you recognize its unique features, the aspects which make it special, and the areas where you can make improvements.
  3. Make it yours. You can bring your own personality into your home by adding personal touches throughout. Display your favorite artwork, hang photos of your family and friends, or add home decor that reflects your style.
  4. Make improvements. Even small improvements can make a big difference in how you feel about your home. Simple things like painting the walls, replacing light fixtures, or changing the flooring can instantly make it feel like a new place. If you want to tackle bigger improvements, we have a huge database of contractors and vendors that can help.
  5. Declutter. Clutter can make a space feel cramped and overwhelming. Take some time to declutter your home and get rid of anything that you don’t need or love. See our article Where to Get Rid of Stuff in St. Louis.
  6. Prioritize comfort. Your home should be a place of comfort and relaxation, so make sure to prioritize comfort. Comfortable furniture, cozy rugs, and soft bedding can help.
  7. Show gratitude. It can be easy to focus on the things that you don’t like about your home, but try to show gratitude for the things you do have. Acknowledge the roof over your head and all of the other things that your home provides, which hopefully includes great memories with loved ones.
  8. Plan for the future. If you are outgrowing your home and truly need to start planning for a move, reach out to us for how to make that happen – even if it is 6 – 18 months out. We can make recommendations for improvements you can make over time that will make the most sense for your goals. And we can share a “Wants vs. Needs” checklist with you. We’ll look at the data together and create a customized timeline to help. Having a plan for the future can make your current living situation feel better.
