The Shaw Neighborhood Experience

Shaw is a local historic district whose architectural character is protected through the City of St. Louis’ historic-preservation ordinances. Blocks of red-brick homes, decorative stonework, stained glass, original millwork, welcoming front porches, and mature trees give the neighborhood an established sense of place.

Residents are passionate about their neighborhood, as evidenced by the many SHAW stickers displayed on the rear windows of cars. Shaw is not simply a location—it is an identity.

During the week, elementary school students can be seen walking to St. Margaret of Scotland or Mann Elementary. On weekends, residents of all ages head to Tower Grove Park, stop for coffee or ice cream, browse the farmers’ market, or meet friends for dinner at a neighborhood restaurant.

The Shaw Neighborhood Improvement Association, commonly known as SNIA, helps support that strong community identity by organizing events, leading neighborhood initiatives, maintaining a community directory, and producing the annual Historic Shaw Art Fair.

With grand historic homes, tree-lined streets, locally owned businesses, and two of St. Louis’ most treasured green spaces just outside its borders, Shaw remains one of the city’s most distinctive neighborhoods.

Missouri Botanical Garden
Being able to walk to the world-class Missouri Botanical Garden (above) and to Tower Grove Park is one of the many perks of living in Shaw.

Located between Interstate 44, South Grand Boulevard, Tower Grove Park, and the Missouri Botanical Garden, Shaw combines an established residential atmosphere with remarkable access to restaurants, cafés, festivals, parks, and cultural attractions. The neighborhood’s walkability and central location make it possible to enjoy many of the things people love most about city living without venturing far from home.

In fact, a recent survey* found that 89% of respondents consider sidewalks and places to walk important when deciding where to live, while 82% said being within easy walking distance of shops and parks is an important factor. Nearly three-quarters (74%) said access to places where they can walk or exercise a pet is important.
Historic Shaw Demographics
According to the 2020 Census—the most recent official neighborhood-level count—Shaw has 6,919 residents and 3,633 housing units. Its housing stock includes stately Victorian residences, brick two- and four-family buildings, townhomes, bungalows, condominiums, and thoughtfully designed newer homes.

Shaw Real Estate in 2026

Shaw continues to be one of St. Louis’ most sought-after historic neighborhoods. Its housing options range from meticulously preserved Victorian residences and gracious historic homes to charming bungalows, townhouses, condominiums, multifamily buildings, and contemporary infill construction.

Over the past decade, property values in Shaw have risen significantly. In June 2016, the median sale price was $281,500.

From May 1 through July 28, 2026, the median sale price for a single-family home in Shaw was $495,000, compared with $386,875 during the same period in 2025. That represents an increase of approximately 28% year over year.

Individual results can vary considerably depending on property type, condition, architectural integrity, parking, renovations, and location within the neighborhood. A restored historic residence on one of Shaw’s signature blocks may perform very differently from a condominium, multifamily property, newer home, or property requiring substantial renovation.
