Town and Country, MO: Wooded Estates on the County's Largest Footprint

At 11.68 square miles, Town and Country is the biggest of St. Louis County's quiet estate suburbs, and it doesn't act crowded. Wooded lots, long driveways, and real distance between neighbors are the norm here, split across three of the region's top school districts.

Quick facts:

  • 11.68 square miles, about 11,640 residents, one of the most spacious and lowest-density suburbs in St. Louis County
  • Home to Bellerive Country Club, host of the 1965 U.S. Open and the 1992 and 2018 PGA Championships
  • Served by three school districts: Parkway, Kirkwood, and Ladue
  • Incorporated in 1950, re-incorporated as a city in 1975

The Land

Town and Country is the biggest of St. Louis County's quiet suburbs by area, and it doesn't act crowded. Wooded lots, long driveways, and real distance between neighbors are the norm here, which is unusual this close to both Clayton and Chesterfield.

The Schools

Rather than one district, Town and Country is split three ways, among Parkway, Kirkwood, and Ladue school districts, so families can end up in any of three highly regarded systems depending on which street they buy on. Maryville University's campus is here too, along with Missouri Baptist Medical Center.

A Little History

Town and Country incorporated as a village in 1950 and became a fourth-class city in 1975, part of a wave of small St. Louis County communities that formed their own governments rather than get absorbed by their bigger neighbors. What started as a scattering of farms and estates has stayed remarkably true to that character ever since.

The Houses

Homes here run large and custom, built for wooded, acre-plus lots rather than the other way around. It's a market for buyers who want space first and are willing to be a short drive, rather than a short walk, from the nearest storefront.

Who Town and Country Is For
  • Buyers who want real land, wooded lots, and distance from the neighbors
  • Families who want their pick of three top-tier school districts
  • Golf fans who'd like Bellerive Country Club practically in the backyard
  • Anyone moving up from a smaller suburb into true estate territory
