Grand Victorian Homes Built Around the City's Oldest Park
Lafayette Square is the city's grandest collection of Victorian mansions, Second Empire townhomes, and wrought-iron balconies, all built around Lafayette Park, the oldest public park west of the Mississippi. Little else in St. Louis looks like it.
Quick facts:
Lafayette Park predates Forest Park by decades. The city set the land aside in 1836 and formally dedicated it in 1851, making it the first public park west of the Mississippi. It once held a bronze statue of Thomas Hart Benton, the first public monument of its kind west of the river, and drew senators, steamboat pilots, and even a future Supreme Court justice to build mansions around its edges. Then, on May 27, 1896, a tornado tore through and took out nearly every tree in the park along with much of the neighborhood around it.
The tornado sent Lafayette Square into a seventy-year decline, as the wealthy families who built it moved west toward Forest Park instead of rebuilding. What brought it back wasn't a developer, it was neighbors: a restoration committee formed in the late 1960s that took on the Victorian mansions one at a time. By 1972, Lafayette Square was named the city's first historic district. The National Register added it a year later, and most of the neighborhood's grand homes were fully restored by the mid-2000s.
Park Avenue and the streets around it carry the neighborhood's day-to-day life now: Park Avenue Coffee for the morning rush, Clementine's Creamery for something sweeter, and Planter's House for a cocktail that takes the history as seriously as the neighborhood does. The Lafayette Square Restoration Committee still runs the annual house tour and the holiday lights display that draws people in from across the city every December.
The homes here date mostly from the neighborhood's 1860s-to-1880s boom: Second Empire townhomes, Federalist-style residences, and ornate Victorian mansions along Lafayette, Missouri, Mississippi, and Park Avenues, restored down to the ironwork after decades of neglect. Newer loft conversions in old commercial buildings round things out, so it's historic homes and modern condos on the same block rather than one or the other.
