Upon entering the expansive foyer at 3145 Russell eyes will instantly travel to the massive stained glass window in the stairwell. The glass was imported from Germany during the home’s construction in 1908 and is just one example of the artistic flair throughout this historic home in Compton Heights where intricate leaded glass and stained glass have been preserved throughout the main level.

Dining Room Fresco artwork – Henry Doellner

In the dining room, a rare fresco signed in 1908 by artist Henry Doellner adorns the upper perimeter. This technique of mural painting requires dry-powder pigment to be applied upon freshly-laid, or wet lime plaster. The pigment merges with the plaster, and with the setting of the plaster, the painting becomes an integral part of the wall.

The bucolic scene juxtaposed with the chandelier and the rich woodwork in the room presents a dynamic dining space. Our client has researched this artist and has only been able to find one remaining fresco work of his in the area. Doellner’s studio was on 2nd Street and a history book on Benton Park West indicates he lived at 3343 Minnesota with his wife and daughter in 1900.

Kitchen Mural artwork – Julie Malone

In the kitchen, a hand-painted mural under the chair rail is by noted St. Louis artist Julie Malone, who is represented locally by  Houska Gallery. Her signature atmospheric abstract style is evident in the colorful brushwork that brings a sense of playfulness to the space.

Julie has said about her work, “The subject is generally unclear and truly imagined, but it hints at something known: a sunset, trees, water, a garden. I am fascinated with the visual effects that color makes when it is revealed by light streaming across objects, and when the glorious sun illuminates our landscape during both sunrise and sunset.”
